The Hebrew word for prayer, תפלה (tefilah), can be interpreted in several different ways. One theory is that it derives from the word פלל (palal), meaning “to judge.” This would suggest that prayer can be understood as a way of examining or evaluating oneself. Some suggest a connection to the word טופל (tofel), meaning “to connect” or “to bind together” — prayer then becomes an act of reaching outward, an attempt to connect with that or those beyond oneself. Others relate it to the word פתיל (petil), meaning “thread,” creating an image of prayer as that which binds God and human beings together.
