ברא (Bara)

The Hebrew word ברא (bara) appears in the first sentence of the Hebrew Bible. Traditionally translated as “to create,” the verb has also been understood by a number of scholars as carrying meanings such as “to separate” or “to cut.”

The project traces the relationship between creation and separation through the act of cutting. In the process, cutting becomes not only an act of separation, but also a means of creation. One of the works that emerged was א (the Aleph).
